Faithill: Music can only come from God.

Cary Tennis of Salon was writing about music in his column once and said this:

"...we humans will bang on things, blow into things, strike things and build things to make music of such complexity, order, symmetry and power that we cannot even adequately describe or analyze what we ourselves have done."

This struck me as true about so many human endeavors - love, art, science, culture, and even spirituality. Like music, these endeavors exemplify laws of harmony which seem to arise from universal order. It seems amazing and wonderful to me that we humans can find and express this order with our own artistry.

Perhaps this is why spiritual experiences, even if they are entirely our own creation, can have such complexity and power - they are expressions of the harmony of the universe.

Grimm: We still haven't defined 'spiritual' in any useful sense so it's hard to comment really.

Hi Grimm, that's a good point! However, I don't expect we'll ever define 'spiritual' to satisfy everyone in this crowd.

I do know that theists and atheists alike can have 'transcendent experiences' and often describe them in similar terms, regardless of what they believe about the experience.
